Aiming for a prize of state financing, 10 business owners Thursday night pitched their ideas for start-up companies, offering services and products ranging from increasing classroom safety to battling obesity.

The Entrepreneur Innovation Awards – melding capitalism and speed-dating – took place in a movie theater before an audience of about 100 networking business owners and start-up developers clutching buckets of popcorn. It was staged by Connecticut Innovations, a state program that helps finance growing companies.

A crowd favorite was a kite-surfing company’s idea for an electric inflator and hand pump for a lighter and cheaper portable compressor. Aeolian took home the title of “Crowd favorite” among the night’s winners and will be using the winnings to invest in Research & Development(R&D) efforts.
